Newsletter - Volume 3 - 2002, Summer

The Deep Cove Heritage Society office makes its home in the ten-year-old Deep Cove Cultural Centre on the corner of the main intersection in the centre Deep Cove.

The Centre stands on the location of the first home (the large white building in the top right photo) built by the Moore family in Deep Cove. What is now the corner of Gallant Avenue and Panorama Drive was known by residents until the 1960s as Second Street and Burns Avenue.

The first shack was built on the site in 1919 by John and Rhoda Moore; a home they shared with their seven children; and later ran as Deep Cove Lodge. The lots at that time cost $15 each. The shack later became a horse stable, when a new 14-room two story house was built. It burned to the ground in the early 1950s. The Moore's built a new home at what is now Mount Seymour Parkway and Dollarton Highway.

Meanwhile, back at Second and Burns, a new building housing Baldwin's Restaurant was built. Part of this building contained another store that various businesses ran out of including a bakery and it had pinball machines in it at one point. That building came down around 1970 and the area became an extension of Panorama Park.

The new Deep Cove Cultural Centre was completed in March 1992. This well used venue is the home of four community groups, The Seymour Art Gallery, Deep Cove Stage Society, First Impressions Theatre and the Deep Cove Heritage Society.

Car & Trunk Sale
SAT., JUNE 22ND, 2002

Considering the decision to have this sale was only made a few weeks prior to the event it was a great success.

Seymour Art Gallery: Thanks to their committee for offering us the chance to use the space originally for their own sale. Special thanks to Maurice Decosta of Sutherland school for storing Garage Sale items at the school and especially her sorting of donated items. It was most appreciated. Friday set up. Hauling the boxes from Sutherland School to the Cultural Centre was a big job, thanks to Arthur & Vivienne Coverdale and Mary Johnson for the use of their vehicles and manpower. Mary's sister from California Nancy Tinsley hadn't bargained for volunteer work on her vacation! Many thanks to her. Setting up and marking also takes longer than you think.

Thanks Pat Morrice, Vivienne, Mary, Jyette Olsen for giving up a nice sunny afternoon! Saturday. The day started at 7.20 am with Janet putting up signs, keeping cars from parking in front of her office. She had offered to give Heritage a portion of the money taken in on the sale of office furniture. Unfortun-ately she had no takers! Thanks go to Mary, Pat and Vivienne for coming early and starting the set up outside the Centre on the patio.

By 10.00 am our other troops had arrived and we were in good shape. It was great to have our stalwart volunteers Eric Morter and Harvey Burt manning the Heritage table, selling tickets for the draw and guarding the cash...wish I had a photo of you Harvey in that cowboy hat!!

Thanks to June Drake for attempting to sell from your car ... after all it was a car trunk sale! However we didn't have others coming and doing the same thing. It's a great idea and we should try advertising and explaining how it is done in the future.

Hazel Best, Marilyn Myers, Eric, Harvey, June, Pat, Vivienne, and Janet were around to sell and a good crowd came by. Thanks to Ron Morrice for buying the wind surfing board ... we certainly couldn't have stored it for next year. Big thanks to Mary, Patrick Johnson and Ron Morrice for helping with clean up ... everyone was bushed by 3.00 pm. Thanks to Deborah McGovern for coming by at the end to buy up some of the treasures not sold!

A total of 13 volunteers participated in the day! Well done everyone. Advertising: A big thank you to our co-ordinator Eileen Smith who organized making of posters, draw tickets, newspaper advertising we can always rely on her coming through!

Vivienne did a great job sticking up flyers everywhere and taking them down on Sunday! And wow the three signs donated and made by Eileen and husband Michael Smith were marvelous! We will be using them in future events, they are great!! Thanks to both of them for their generous donation of time and the signs.

Donations: All items were donated by members of our great community in Deep Cove and a big thank you to them for supporting the Deep Cove Heritage Society. We raised close to $500 and the money will assist us in continuing to operate our Heritage office. Presently the committee is seeking Sponsors, and applying for foundation funds. If you can donate, sponsor or assist we would love to hear from you.

Thank you Mary and Pat for heading up this latest fund raising event.
